Common Sense Media - The online leader of Digital Citizenship information, reviews, articles, and "ultimate" guides.

Their Own Devices Podcast -  Moderated by Marc Groman, an Obama White House tech and privacy adviser, and David Reitman, an adolescent medical doctor.  They have fantastic canded conversations with kids, parents, and experts.  Highly recommended!   A list of episodes is here.

Note to Self Podcast - "Tech show about being human".  Jump in with this episode about teens and balancing screen time.

Reply+All Podcast “‘A podcast about the internet’ that is actually an unfailingly original exploration of modern life and how to survive it.” – The Guardian.  Start with the episode "The Snapchat Thief" which reveals how easily hackers can grab your personal information and what they do with it.  The episode is also chock full of strategies for safeguarding your information.

Tech Talk Tuesdays Blog - Screenagers Film Maker moderates the blog and parents weigh in with their experiences on each topic.

Parental Controls

While parental controls can be useful in monitoring or restricting access to a variety of digital media and devices, they are no substitute for parent involvement, conversation, and household norms for device use.  No tool is bullet proof and relying on them for managing your child's online time or behavior can be a risky strategy.  That said, here are a few useful parental control resources.

 

Spectrum Cable - Spectrum has some resources for controls which can be used to manage your home network.  If you do not use Spectrum, check with your internet provider as they may have options for customizing access to your home network.

Create!

Kids consume media at a tremendously higher rate than they create it.  As part of building a healthy digital footprint, encourage your child to create media and show it off!  Here are some Apps already on student iPads which can be used to create amazing video, graphic, and audio projects.  I try to practice what I preach, so here is MY Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sarahhglatz/

  • TayasuiSketch, Art Studio - drawing, painting

  • Explain Everything - Edit photos, create video, create voice overs, draw, present

  • Hopscotch, Scratch Jr, Swift Playgrounds - Coding

  • iMovie - Create videos and trailers

  • Garage Band - Create music and podcasts (voice recordings)

  • Touchcast Studio - Create videos using Green screen (or other background), add videos, photos, drawing, etc.  Just like a real news studio.

  • iMotion - Create stop motion and time lapse animation videos
